You do not buy a child seat only for your child; you buy it for the combination of child, bicycle, rear rack and daily route. On an e-bike or longtail, a seat can appear to fit mechanically even though the rack or mounting system is not designed for that load.
That is why compatibility comes first. Comfort, colour and accessories come afterwards.
What do Dutch rules say?
Children under the age of 8 must have a safe seating position on a bicycle with sufficient support for the back, hands and feet. The Dutch government gives a child seat as an example. Footrests and proper spoke protection are important to prevent feet from entering the wheel.
According to the Dutch government, a simple coat guard is not a substitute for proper spoke protection.

MIK is not the same as MIK HD
This difference can easily lead to a wrong purchase. A standard MIK rack is intended for accessories such as baskets and panniers. MIK HD systems are designed for higher loads and certain child seats.
Urban Iki explicitly warns that a MIK HD child seat only fits a MIK HDrear rack; simply seeing the word “MIK” is not enough. Check the marking on the rack itself.
Three mounting types
| Mounting type | Advantage | Check especially |
|---|---|---|
| Rear carrier | Compact and common | Rack load rating and applicable standard |
| MIK HD | Quick click-on/click-off mounting | That the bicycle genuinely has a MIK HD rack |
| Frame mount | May work when the rack is unsuitable | Frame shape, tube diameter and manufacturer compatibility |
Three specific child seats worth comparing
Thule Yepp 2 Maxi – rear-rack mount
Thule lists a maximum child weight of 22 kg and maximum height of 110 cm. The rack-mounted version weighs around 3.5 kg and uses a five-point harness. Thule specifies that the rear rack should comply with NEN-EN ISO 11243:2016 and have a rated capacity of 27 kg.
Worth considering if: you have a suitable traditional rear rack and want a seat designed specifically for rack mounting.
Urban Iki U–me MIK HD
Urban Iki specifies this seat for children from roughly 9 months to 6 years, up to 22 kg and 110 cm. It uses a five-point harness and, according to the manufacturer, is certified to EN14344:2022. The seat clicks directly onto a MIK HD rack.
Worth considering if: your bicycle already has an integrated MIK HD rack and you want to remove the seat regularly.

Bobike One Junior MIK-HD
This is not a toddler seat but a junior solution. Bobike lists a recommended age from 6 years, a minimum height of 110 cm and a maximum weight of 27 kg. The One Junior MIK-HD fits only MIK-HD racks and is, according to Bobike, intended for e-bikes up to 25 km/h.
Worth considering if: your child is outgrowing a traditional rear child seat but is not yet ready to cycle every longer journey independently.

Pay attention to total load capacity
The seat's maximum child weight is not the only limit that matters. The rear rack, bicycle and any longtail passenger setup each have their own limits. Always follow the lowest relevant limit in the complete system.
On a longtail, footrests, sideboards, safety rails and other passenger accessories may also be required or recommended. Follow the bicycle manufacturer's instructions; adding a child seat does not automatically make a longtail passenger-ready.
E-bike: extra weight is noticeable when stationary
An e-bike with a child on the back can feel significantly heavier when setting off and parking. A stable kickstand, enough frame clearance and a calm mounting routine are therefore just as important as the child seat itself.
Before using the setup with a child, practise putting the bicycle on and off the stand while it is empty.
Our checklist before installation
- Child's weight and height.
- Type of rear rack and visible marking.
- Permitted rear-rack load.
- Wheel size and clearance for footrests.
- Proper spoke protection.
- Free movement of brakes, cables and battery.
- Stable kickstand and safe mounting routine.
- Compatibility according to both the bicycle and child-seat manuals.
Have an e-bike or longtail and do not know which mounting system it uses? Send us a photo of the rear rack or visit FietsGenot in Lelystad. We can look at the bicycle first before you order a seat.
